In previous articles in this series, we have presented static and dynamic systems without tripods, the former being the most commonly used because of its cheapness and simplicity. However, what if you want to access every single item stored at any time, cannot be stockpiled without handling or because of the shape or strength of the goods to be stored? That's where rack storage systems come in.
The in-line racking system
This is how most people imagine a warehouse: rows of steel racks stretching up to the roof of the warehouse, with aisles between them, where forklifts or various types of lifts help to load, unload and move goods. This is no coincidence, as in-line racking is one of the most widely used storage and warehousing technologies.
A variety of rack designs can be used to suit different types of goods:
- shelves
- compartments
- tray
- account
- karos
- consolos
A shelves systems are perhaps the most widespread and widely used solution. They consist of quick and easy to assemble components with scalable load capacities, i.e. they can be adapted to the customer's needs. The shelves can store a very wide range of goods, from palletised products to small packaged goods that can be handled manually.
A compartments racks are perfect for storing large volumes of non-stackable stock.
A with tray or drawers systems are used for the storage of small, packaged or bulk goods. They are often combined with automated, páternoster or carousel-type automatic storage and dispensing equipment.
A lever and bracket racks are a common solution for the storage of long, special goods such as beams and pipes, Rolled or pressed products.
Advantages and disadvantages of in-line rack storage
Advantages of the system
- Easy access
All elements of the inventory are directly accessible at any time, thus not only the FIFO principle can be met, but both manual and automated warehouse systems can be used to achieve fast and efficient picking and dispensing.
- Flexibility
The racks are relatively easy to adapt to the warehouse and the storage or work processes. The racking can be used to facilitate loading or transport can be added to with podiums or with galleries.
- Automation capability
Rack systems can be easily made dynamic, in such warehouses the movement of goods, as well as the storage processes can be easily automated.
Disadvantages of the system
One of the disadvantages of this method is that it does not take into account the racking system, the lifting equipment needed to move the goods and any automated storage systems relatively high investment costs, but it is forward-looking by design, can be reduced by accurate assessment of needs.
Can also reduce the cost of operating equipment regular maintenance, which extends their life cycle.
Another disadvantage of rack systems is that in the case of, if the racking is low, the unit costs of storage will be high. When installing such systems, it may therefore be worthwhile to build the highest possible racks and aim to maximise volume.
