Our series of articles on storage first and second In Part 2, we reviewed the most common processes in a warehouse and how to design the warehouse and supporting processes to accommodate them. To conclude the series, we will look at the most common piece-warehouse technologies.
Rackless storage systems can be divided into two groups. Depending on whether or not the goods are moved during storage, the systems static or dynamic they can be. Both systems are quite well known and widely used, so let's get into the details, starting with the characteristics of the static system, the advantages and disadvantages of the method.
Not overcomplicated
Probably the simplest storage method, as it requires almost no equipment other than the warehouse. In essence, the goods received must be placed on the warehouse floor, side by side or stacked on top of each other. The system has two sub-types, block and row.
Block layout
In the block layout, the goods are loaded using the maximum available space they are packed close together. It is usually used in the storage of one type of product in warehouses where the FIFO principle is not required.
Serial layout
Using the serial layout goods are placed in the warehouse leaving a corridor between them. Although this solution does not offer such a high space utilisation, it allows for a good separation of different product types and direct access to several pallets, making the FIFO principle perfectly applicable in warehousing.
Let's expand upwards!
Vertical expansion can also be achieved by using rackless storage systems with the by stacking goods, which works for both block and row layouts, although it has limitations. To maintain stability and minimise the risk of accidents in the warehouse, without scaffolding up to 3-4 storeys high goods can and should be stored on top of each other.
Advantages and disadvantages of a static system without a tripod
Benefits:
- low investment costs;
- easy rearrangement;
- space saving.
Disadvantages:
- a limited number of storage levels;
- the limited enforceability of the FIFO principle;
- stacking goods increases the risk of damage.
