Common crane faults: when a minor fault leads to a long downtime

ECO-4 daruüzem - EcoCranes

Cranes rarely break down completely out of the blue. Most serious problems are preceded by subtle signs: an unusual noise, slower movement, jerking, imprecise stopping, overheating or increasingly frequent minor malfunctions. It is easy to get used to these – until the day the crane simply fails to start.

Can be prevented through maintenance

One of the most common types of fault is caused by natural wear and tear. Brakes, wheels, ropes, chains, bearings and other moving parts are subjected to continuous stress. Wear and tear in itself is not a fault; however, it becomes one if we only address it once the part has reached the limit of its operational life. The planned maintenance It is important because the cheapest way to deal with a fault is when it is only just beginning to develop.

A common problem with electrical and control system It could also be a fault. A contact problem, a damaged cable, a sensor or limit switch fault, or an overheating component: some of these may initially only occur intermittently. This is precisely why the „it’s still working” mindset is dangerous.

The erratic operation of a safety function must not be regarded as normal operation.

Usage = cycles

However, the root cause of many faults lies not in a single component, but in the operating conditions. If a crane is used in a load cycle that differs from the one for which it was designed – for example, if it is frequently operated close to its rated load capacity, or if the nature of the task changes over time – its service life will also be affected.

The cranes are expected to service life It is therefore not simply their age that determines this, but the load spectrum and the duty cycles.

There is also a mistake that can be made as early as the procurement stage: choosing a crane that is not suitable for the task. A different design is required for the continuous handling of materials in a production hall, for outdoor loading, or for operating in a confined workspace.

The bad elected Such equipment may not only be less economical, but may also lead to faster wear and tear; indeed, environmental may also raise concerns.

What should you look out for?

Any changes in sound, movement, braking, vibration, overheating, and any other phenomena that deviate from normal operation. An operator’s day-to-day experience often indicates a problem sooner than any periodic inspection – provided that the observation is recorded and reported.

The aim of good maintenance is not merely to get a faulty crane up and running again.

It is far more valuable to identify a fault before a breakdown occurs. An anomaly detected in good time often requires only a minor repair; the same problem, if detected later, may result in the replacement of parts, production downtime and significantly higher costs.
