Radio remote control for cranes

The safety of crane operations is determined by three main factors: the technical condition of the equipment, the conditions of the working area and the decisions of the crane operator. Radio remote control of lifting equipment brings real improvements where the working area has so far limited the operator's visibility and the ability to react quickly.

With traditional top-suspended control equipment, the crane operator often works in a fixed position. As a result, dead spots can easily occur when the load moves between machines, machine lines, columns or scaffolding. In such cases, the accuracy of the lifting operation depends to a large extent on the on signals and the experience of the operator.

The radio control allows the operator to stand where he can see the full range of movement of the lifting device and control the process confidently, without the need for any external assistance.

This significantly reduces the risk of injury to other workers, the load being lifted and the work area Roll the dice. At the same time, your own safety is increased, as you can keep a greater distance from danger zones, without having to be in the immediate vicinity of swinging loads or moving structures.

This makes it easy to see, radio remote control is not just a matter of convenience, but a direct safety factor.

Where can it be used successfully?

The use of radio remote control can specifically increase safety in the following work areas:

  • in crowded halls where several work processes are running in parallel;
  • in areas with heavy traffic;
  • in a work environment using hazardous technologies (heat, chemicals);
  • maintenance or for installation work where several professionals are working at the same time;
  • when the positioning of the load requires high accuracy.

Choosing the right remote control

However, the safety benefit is only realised if the system is properly selected and integrated into the workspace. The radio control system shall have reliable signal transmission, an emergency stop function and a defined operating logic in case of signal loss.

Same authorisation management is important: who controls the crane, how it is handed over and under what conditions the system can be used must be clearly recorded.

The installation of a remote control system can only increase the safety of work processes if all of these are implemented.

Before investing in such a development, an accurate assessment and risk assessment is always necessary.

Although a spectacular improvement over fixed control units, only if the work area really requires a radio solution.

It is only a real improvement where better visibility and optimal operator positioning reduce the uncertainty in the control of the lifting equipment and the possibility of accidental situations when lifting and moving heavy loads.

Where the crane's range of movement is clearly visible, the loads are light and the environment is clear, the safety margin may be less than the investment itself.
